How to get top marks

The media is full of reports about how easy it is to get good exam grades compared to thirty years ago, and the social life of a student doesn't help when you're trying to prove you do actually have more going on in your head than your social life.

The first thing you need to do is really make up your mind that you really want that top grade. You deserve it, and you're going to work your backside off to get it. Of course, there are probably other things you need to take into account, like the part time job and the fact you want to go out occasionally and not become a hermit.

Focus on your strong points when you're going for the higher grades - if you know that you're not so great when it comes to the actual exam part, put in extra effort on the dissertation or a brilliant presentation instead. The coursework you've done will contribute to your overall grade, so try not to see the exams itself as the be all and end all, and spread your efforts across the whole course rather than pinning all your hopes on getting a good grade just from the exams.

Again, it's boring and it's been said time and time again, but you do need to set aside time to actually do the work. It's tempting to let a part time job, a social life and generally enjoying yourself get in the way of what you're actually there for, but at some point you'll have to sacrifice this and get on with the work if you really want to get the best grade. If you can, try to set aside regular time to review the work you've done in lectures, and to do the assignments. It might be a pain when you really don't want to do it, and you're really far too tired to even think about essays - but it will be worth the effort when you get the grade you really want.
